Philippine NBI 101 – How to apply for NBI online

By Kim Arveen Patria | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom  – Sat, 25 Jan 14

Finally, you no longer have to wait in line to get an NBI clearance for the application process many Filipinos have been complaining about is online.

The online NBI clearance application system has been launched Friday at the websites of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department.

If you need the document, you should fill out the online form before going to the nearest NBI centers for payment, biometrics enrollment and release.

Some 5.6 million Filipinos were given clearances in 2013, NBI’s former biometrics service provider Realtime Data Management Services Inc. (RDMSI) said.

RDMSI data further showed that that since July 2011, an average of 21,000 people daily were given NBI clearances, a usual requirement in job applications.

NBI’s contract with RDMSI ended in December 2013, causing hiccups in the process. The agency stopped issuing of clearances in malls and satellite offices.

The NBI clearance system is now run by the Justice Department, under its National Justice Information System, which is aimed at linking justice sector institutions.

“We shall continue to roll out and implement solutions to progressively eliminate queues and simplify processes,” Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said.

“Online application is the logical next step after the switch,” she added. The DOJ statement also noted that the renewal module will also be implemented soon.

How to form a lifelong bond with your child (while running a career)?

By Cecile Baltasar for Yahoo Southeast Asia | Yahoo SHE – Mon, 6 January 2014
How to form a lifelong bond with your child (while running a career)

Here’s a question many working parents ask: how do you form a strong bond with your child when your to-do list is packed with meetings, errands, and desk work from 7 AM to 8 PM every weekday?

The solution is simple: “Spend uninterrupted time with your children for at least 30 minutes every day,” says Maribel Dionisio, MA, a parenting and relationship consultant at AMD Love Consultants for Families and Couples.

Here are a few tips to help you do just that:

Have daily one-on-one sessions with each child. “When you get home, rest for 20 minutes, then spend the next 30 minutes with one child,” suggests Dionisio. “Take a break for a few minutes, then move on to the next child.” It may take some adjusting at first, but once you’ve established a routine, it will become easier.

“Many parents complain to me, ‘How can I give 30 minutes every day when I have so many other things I need to do?’” says Dionisio. “I tell them, ‘If you can’t give 30 minutes a day, then there goes your influence on your child. How will you get to know your child if you don’t spend time with him or her?’”

To be able to do this effectively, consistently, and without regret, you will have to line up your priorities. And you’ll have to say no to things that are of less concern to you so you can focus on your children.

Go on weekly solo dates with each child, as well. Dionisio says apart from spending exclusive time with your kids daily, it’s also important for each parent to take each of the kids out on one-on-one dates every week (or every two weeks).

But there’s one rule: “You have to do it on a budget of P50,” says Dionisio. That will force you and your child to be creative, and it will teach your child financial responsibility at the same time. Will you have ice cream at an outdoor playground? Kick around a ball in the UP sunken garden? Part of the fun would be figuring out with your child what you can do together.

“This weekly date will be so special to your child because he will have you all to himself,” says Dionisio. “Make sure there’s no interruption from anyone. Turn off all your gadgets. And then just talk with your child: ‘Who’s your best friend? What’s your teacher like?’”

Set a schedule and let everyone know about it. This one-on-one project is a family effort, so everyone has to be in on it wholeheartedly. Both parents have to figure out a schedule for the weekly dates—who takes whom out, how long they’ll be out, etc. Divide your time wisely, especially if you have many kids. Write down this schedule and put it up where everyone in your family can see. This will create a routine, help parents figure out their priorities, and show kids when their turn is with you.

“If you do this consistently and with love, you’ll see the results immediately,” says Dionisio.

With teenagers, you’ll have to be creative. “Your weekly dates won’t be good enough anymore when your kids become teenagers,” says Dionisio. When that time comes, you’ll have to be more creative because you’ll be the one chasing them to spend time with you. Is your teen going to her friend’s house? Offer to drive her over. Does your son need some supplies from the bookstore? Offer to go shopping with him. Does your daughter have rehearsals at school? Pick her up and take her out for ice cream after.

Or, Dionisio suggests, “Just say, ‘I heard there’s this new restaurant. You want to try it with me?’ Let them know it’s your special time with them. But don’t label it a date or your kids will say, ‘Yuck, you’re corny, Mom.’”

Don’t use a cookie-cutter routine for all your kids. Because each child is different, you’ll have to treat them differently, as well.

“Your eldest and your second child probably think in opposite ways,” says Dionisio. “If you put both kids together and force them to do the same things with you, normally, they’ll just end up fighting. Or you might inadvertently give more attention to the louder child. Your alone time has to be custom-fit for each child. Some kids need more alone time with their parents than other kids.”

If your child likes to doodle, tape sheets of manila paper on one wall of your house and paint a mural with her. If your other child likes to read books, take him to the National library on your weekend date, and scour the shelves for interesting children’s books.

Take advantage while they’re still young. Spending time with your children is important, more so while they’re still young.

“It takes three to five years to change behavior,” says Dionisio. “The sooner parents understand this principle, the better. Their positive relationship with their kids will give parents leverage if they have relationship problems with their kids later on. They won’t have to do repair work [on their kids’ attitude] if they work on it now.”

And by ‘working on it,’ that means spending quality (and quantity) time with your kids. If you connect with them this way for their first 10 years, you’ll be able to connect with them for the rest of their lives.

5 Bad Habits That Will Ruin A Relationship

By Mel Sim for Yahoo! Southeast Asia | Mon, 6 January 2014
5 Bad Habits That Will Ruin A Relationship

Bad habits are fine if you’re living by yourself. But if it involves a significant other, it can become a hindrance to your relationship progressing into anything serious. Nothing kills a relationship faster than bad habits that either irk your partner or create unnecessary tension between the two of you. And like it or not, most of us ladies have some really annoying habits that can drive him up the wall (and away from you).

Read on to see if these habits are familiar and find out how to get rid of them.

1. Nagging
One minute it’s about his laundry. Next, it is about his good-for-nothing friends. Tomorrow, there will be something else that you will be nagging about. And there’s no stopping you! Nobody wants to feel like they are dating their mothers or that whatever they do is not good enough. And with nagging also comes the bad habit of wanting to change your man, whether it is with his appearance or the way he handles his career or personal life.

You don’t have to nitpick every little thing in his life. Just focus on the big things (for example, if he should be a little more proactive with his job and don’t nag, but encourage instead). You don’t want him to look at you when you are nagging, wondering why he’s putting up with being chided all the time.

2. Spending way too much
Research shows that one of the most common thing couples fight about is money. And when there’s lack of it, the fighting becomes even more consistent. So if you and your guy are trying to save up for a house or a holiday, going on a shopping splurge is not going to please him, especially when he’s the only one saving while you are spending. If you are married or working towards that, your impulsive spending will send his cue that he’s building a life with someone who has little regards for financial stability in the future!

Sit down together and work out a budget that you are comfortable with. And stick with it! There’s no point to this if you find yourself having to hide your purchases. You’ll soon realize how much money you’ve wasted when all that can be used towards building financial security together.

3. Just a little snoop
Sure, it’s one little peek into his text messages at first but as curiosity gets to you, you’ll find yourself complete engrossed into his every private life, from his emails to his Facebook messages! Spying on your guy is never a good thing, especially when a healthy relationship is based on trust. Besides, you wouldn’t want him to be looking through your stuff with a fine-tooth comb either. And imagine if he finds out what you’ve been doing, especially when he has nothing to hide in the first place? If you’re sure he’s hiding something, then either confront him and if you really can’t trust his word, what are you still doing with him in the first place?

4. One small lie

What’s one white lie, right? Well, it is one lie that can lead to another and another and another. Whether you’re lying over what you really think of his new hair cut or how you were actually with your friendly ex instead of your BFF last night, it’s never good to hide things from your partner, big or small. This shows that you either don’t trust him or that you are hiding something you know for sure will make him really upset should he ever find out (which he is most likely to!)

The key to a lasting relationship is openness and honesty. You’d want him to treat you with the same respect so why not offer him the truth? Nobody likes to feel like they’ve been taken for a ride.

5. Green-eyed monster
We get it—you don’t like how chummy your guy is with that sassy hot colleague. But showing your dissatisfaction is one, embarrassing for you, your guy and his friend, and two, a sign of your insecurity in the relationship. Also, if your guy is just being friendly and there’s really nothing going on between him and that colleague (or anyone else for that matter), chances are he’ll be really annoyed with your jealousy, especially if you’ve been accusing him of things!

Find it within yourself to be confident and not to doubt anyone. Besides, he really could have eyes just for you, until you drive him away with your crazy jealous ways.

A MUST watch movies this 2014

By Manila Bulletin | Wed, Jan 01, 2014

Movies? Planning what to do with the family on the (long or short) weekends ahead? I think most of us are excited to know what would be the next to watch out for. Here is a list of the new films that are getting released in 2014.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past

The X-Men films are making a swift comeback this year with the “Days of Future Past” story line. The movie sees a cast from the old and new X-Men. It will feature Hugh Jackman once again as the Wolverine going back in time to join the younger versions of Professor X and Magneto to stop the Sentinel threat. Oh, while at it, a sequel has already been announced, “X-Men: Apocalypse”. Maybe all that time-travel will just really mess things up even more?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The movie is set two years after The Avengers, with Steve Rogers trying to adapt to the modern society. The movie will feature the Winter Soldier and which the Falcon – the first ever African-American superhero. If you’re not that interested in the movie yet, well, Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Scarlett Johansson, will still be in it.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Yes! It’s coming really soon. Some of us are still quite disappointed that Sam Raimi and Toby couldn’t go on, but director Marc Webb showed us a different path to the Spider-Man movies, a bit more closer to Stan Lee’s vision with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) involved. The movie is focus on Peter Parker’s balancing on his normal life and his life as Spider-Man, and we might get hints at what really happened to his parents. It will also feature two of Spidey’s popular villains, the Rhino and Electro (played by Jamie Foxx), and their connections to OsCorp.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Michael Bay returns to direct the fourth Transformers film, with a whole new cast. No more Shia, and hello Mark Wahlberg! But who cares, Optimus will be in it, plus more Autobots and more Decepticons blowing things up. Yes, as a Michael Bay film we can expect lots and lots of explosions and metal banging. This will make Godzilla’s rampage look like child’s play. And speaking of that, this movie is confirmed to have Grimlock on it, the badass transformer that turns into a T-Rex!

Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

The books were meant to be a trilogy and it just seems the movie business is just milking the series, because anyone who have read the books, would surely agree that nothing much really happens in Mockingjay. Well, except of course the all-out war between the rebels and the Capitol. Oh well, so far, the last two movies haven’t disappointed us. Let’s cross our fingers that the next would still be a fantastic thrill ride.

Haven’t seen the trailer yet? Well, better stop reading this and watch it first on Youtube – like now-now… I’ll wait. Done? Doesn’t it look awesome! Forget the first American film that really sucked and think of the classic Japanese Godzilla with uber Pacific Rim graphics. It looks amazing! Definitely every Kaiju fan will adore this. The kids will love this too. Anyone who has a taste of destruction will marvel on this. This would seem to be Godzilla’s reclaim to the throne as the King of Monsters.

The Hobbit: There And Back Again

The Hobbit: There And Back Again

“What have we done?” is probably the most cliché line ever used for massive cliffhangers; but it still has its appeal. The final Hobbit film will be coming out in December finally concluding the new trilogy. Like all concluding movies, this one will contain a classic epic battle. We will most likely see how the “Necromancer” came to power.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

Another Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The movie will feature cosmic superheroes from space and the highly speculated Avengers 3’s villain, Thanos, set to appear as a major character. Not only that, Dave Bautista, a.k.a. former WWE superstar, Dave Batista, has deep connections with Thanos.

300: Rise of An Empire

300: Rise of An Empire

The first movie struck us with awe because of its brutality, cinematography, and a barrage of epic moments. We don’t know much details about the movie, except that it may focus on several historical battles (but not necessarily historically accurate) and about Xerxes’ rise as the “God King”. Based on the trailer, it’s an all-out war, and we can agree this won’t be a Citizen Kane, but this would deliver what film was originally intended for: entertainment.

This movie is being directed by Christopher Nolan. Need we say and know more about this film? Seriously though, nothing much is revealed except that it has Anne Hathaway in it and it’s about astronauts traveling into a wormhole. But do we actually need any more details than that? It’s a Nolan film! Nolan happens to be “the man” who gave us three critically acclaimed Batman movies, Inception, and other superb quality movies like Memento, Following, and The Prestige. With those credentials, I’ll take anything this guy throws at me.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

The first Paranormal movie was creepy. The second was downright scary. The third, well some of us may have wished it never existed. But let’s face it, the movies were scary because it lacked background music. It relied on the sound of a single loud bang to startle the audience. Sound reflex, if you will. But this movie is said to be different that will involve dark rituals and whatnots. It has been screened already, just not worldwide release yet, and reception has been most positive. They claime it would “reinvigorate” the movies.

There are other movies coming this year. Special commendations include Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Expendables 3 (which has Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas and Blade??? – no, no, we meant Wesley Snipes, as new characters), Maleficent, Muppets Most Wanted, Robocop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, another Paranormal Acitivity, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
